On diesel, in vehicles ranging from a Mercedes 280 cDi through to a John Deere 6230, there is an improvement of 3-5% in fuel efficiency and a noticeable qualitative improvement in smoothness with the larger engines tending to have the better increases. On our petrol engined fleet, with vehicles ranging from a Porsche 911 through to a Mercedes A-Class, we found improvements ranging from 3% to nearly 10%, with the largest increase in the smaller engines particularly on longer motorway driving than stop start."
